No matter we say here is not important. It is your business and your choice what to do, protect, and invest. Our main job is now and always to show you the path that we believe that is correct and right for your business. Here is that a Gartner report says not us “Although there is no magic answer on how much impact downtime will have on your business, current industry surveys have shown that the average enterprise organization estimates an impact cost of approximately $5,600 for every minute of unplanned downtime in its primary computing environment,”
I see some thoughts you have right now, we are not Enterprise not even close. That is fine. That means most likely you may close the door if you have serious data breach. Enterprises can handle “coming back” from disaster. Can you? Generally, all small and medium business customers we have rely on computer systems and you may have the same infrastructure. if you cannot restore your last three or six months data after a disaster, you cannot run the business, you cannot take orders, or manufacture the product or sale, provide service.
Let’s have a look what DR is;
- Hardware Fault
- Software Fault
- Malicious ransomware
- Malicious users
- Natural disasters
When I look the list above, I may say we have seen many hardware faults and nowadays Malicious attacks.
- Nearly less than %50 of organizations protects less than half of their servers with a DR plan (2018 survey of Veeam)
- %85 of decision makers are not satisfied of current solution’s ability to recover (2017 Veeam Survey)
- Last 12 months, %77 organizations had at least one outage (Spiceworks October 2018)
- Nearly %40 small businesses close after a disaster (Federal Emergency Management Agency – US)
You cannot effort a downtime
As we can see in the facts and you cannot effort a downtime, but you can effort having a proper backup and DR plan. You think this is expensive right? It is NOT, I can say it. We have clients on DR solutions and there are instances we recovered the data/Server from DR storage to a cloud provider such as Azure or AWS.
Backup is not enough
Having backup is obviously good thing for your business. Is it enough? Real answer today is NOT unfortunately. Backup devices and apps are in same place with your servers and data. If you have big issue on the place, it is likely you may not recover your data from the backups too. So, ITrResiliency is a combination of backup and DR. Therefore, you should consider both at the same time. Also, RTO and RPO time can be considered if you have a fair backup strategy. Such as, backup is set 7pm every night and disaster happened 3pm next business day. The data between 7 pm last night and 3 pm today is gone (If last night backup completed successfully). If you can continuously synchronization between production data and DR, recovery time would not be more than few minutes. So, as you can see DR and backup is two different things.
Cloud based makes your life easier
In the first paragraphs you thought it would be expensive. You may right if you want to buy servers, storage, space, network connection, additional engineer to build and take care it of ongoing management. Or you can go to cloud which is built-in already and ready to use in 10 min. You can see online sync status and restore the data to back to local servers, or to a 3rd party cloud provider such as AWS, Azure. You can see consumption, billing etc…
